Brumley - Reply to Jim Ory

The "Archives Departementales De La Moselle" in Metz thought it might be Bremenil - near Blamont -Arr.de Luneville in the Canton de Baccarat. They felt we should go to Nancy to check with the Historical Archives. We did and they could not find any traces of Brumley ( I had a copy of the Ory Will in French with me and also a listing of the seven families from the Princess Augusta), I think the fact that some 'Trabac' Marriages took place there had bearing on their suggestions. We went to Blamont and to Bremenil, charming places but the Church at Breminile only dated back to 1850 as did their records. Their Revoluton certainly didn't do researchers any favor! I just found a misfiled address of their 'local historian' (who speaks no English and I've forgotten what little French I knew). I shall check with him again. He just may have come up with something. He mad a copy of the Will.

You brought up a point that I didn't catch. That being that the writer of the will didn't write and the 1736 singner of the allegience etc. did sign his own name. Could he have been too ill or injured or was he not on the ship?

The person that made the Will did give the birthplace of his first wife Anne Strasp and her parents, Nicholas and Catherine, as Brumley in Lorraine. He also differenciated that some of the others mentioned were born in different places in GERMAN Lorrriane.

You mentiond the religion factor. I believe that all of his children were baptised in the Catholic Church and he makes a strong point in the will that he was raised in Catholic Church "A and Reg"and believes in the orders and mysteries of the Church. He instructs his second wife, Christine Michel, and she accepts and 'promised to faithefully and legally oblige herself to keep them in the religion C.A.R,'.

Thank you again for pointing out that Nicholas Ory signed his Will with his mark. So he may not be the 26 year old Ory passenger on the Ship, but I truly believe he is referring to ships passengers - Nicholas and Catherine Drasbart/Prasbart/Trasbart and theit daughter Anne, in his will when the reference is made that Brumley Lorraine is their birthplace.
