CHAPTER 19 - NOEL FAMILY ANCESTRY OF BARBARA NOEL, WIFE OF PETER STRASBAUGH SR
INTRODUCTION
This is the ancestral history of Barbara Noel, wife of Peter Strasbaugh Sr, and mother of Joseph, Peter, and Catherine Strausbaugh.
Barbara Noel was the daughter of Peter and Margaret Noel and the granddaughter of Joseph Noel the patriarch of the immigrant Noel family that settled in or near the Pigeon Hills in what are now Paradise Township, York County and Berwick Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania.
Joseph Noel, his wife, and six children came to America in 1736 on the ship Princess Augusta as fellow passengers with the Nicholas Strasbach family.
To the time of arrival in Philadelphia, the known history of the Noel family is essentially the same as the Strasbach family and is not repeated here.
It is thought that like the Strasbach family, the Noel family migrated across Lancaster County and arrived in the Pigeon Hills area sometime between the mid 1740s and 1749. It is not known where between Philadelphia they were located during the period the Strasbach family was in Conestoga Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

Joseph Noel was born about 1680 in Europe, probably in or near the Rhine Valley and possibly in the Alsace-Lorraine region. His origins and early history were probably essentially the same as that of Nicholas Strausbaugh Sr.
Like the Strasbaugh family the Noel family probably came down the Rhine River and boarded the ship Princess Augusta at Rotterdam, Holland and arrived at Philadelphia on September 16, 1736. His family consisted of his wife and six children including son Peter. On the ship's list only the names and ages were given for Joseph age 56 and Peter 16.
Like the Strausbaugh family essentially nothing is known concerning their early years in Pennsylvania. They apparently located in the Pigeon Hills area of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania about or prior to 1749 when that area of Lancas- ter County became a part of the new county of York, Pennsylvania.
The total number of Joseph's children is unknown. He brought six children to America with him and had more children after arrival in America, only one, Joseph Jr has been identified as being born in America.
The only of his children identified by records were sons Peter, Nicholas, and Joseph. John Noel was the other Noel in the Paradise Township area whose family was such a date that it appears he must have been born in Europe prior to 1736 and thus was probably a son of Joseph.
Andrew Noel was in the Menallen Township settlement with other Noel and Stras- baugh families and in close association with descendants of Peter Noel. He died in 1821 at the age 86, thus born about 1735 and prior to the immigration. It is assumed that Andrew of Menallen was the son of Joseph and the youngest of his six children aboard the Princess Augusta.
There were other Noels in early York County who might have been the missing children of Joseph Noel. Each found to date has some flaw which leaves such a connection questionable.
Like Nicholas Strasbach, the first found records pertaining to Joseph after his arrival in America pertain to matters after his death in York County, Pennsyl- vania. Unlike Nicholas Strasbach, we do not have an administration record which lists all his surviving children.
In the York County Orphans Court records. Book A, page 40, "Joseph Noel - 26 March 1754 - son, Joseph, 14 last Dee 25th, apprenticed to Frederick Kuhn, butcher, of Yorkstown." We interpret this that Joseph Sr had died prior to March 26, 1754 and that the Orphans Court had apprenticed his minor son Joseph Jr. in the process of the administration of the estate.
In the Orphan's Court records, Book S, page 69, undated, "Peter and Nicholas Noel ask that their brother, Joseph Noel, be released from Frederick Kuhn, butcher of Yorktown." Apparently this was done and he was apprenticed to Jacob Heidler, Heidler died in 1760 and in his will, "-- and to Joseph Noel who was my Apprentice, his freedom",
The preceding establishes that Joseph Noel Sr did reach York County, and died there some time in late 1753 or early 1754, prior to March 26, 1754.
Where he resided is unknown as no land records have yet been found which locate him. John T. Reily, the Catholic Historian suggests the Noels were of the "French" settlement in Pigeon Hills, and states the "original Noel settler took up 600 acres of land where Noel's mill now is below Abbottstown." Reily did not identify this original settler by name and it is not certain his settler was Joseph or one of his sons.
A researcher suggests that in Reily's perspective, below Abbottstown would mean east toward York rather than south of Abbottstown. It has been suggested that this may have been along Brants Creek about a mile east of Abbottstown in the vicinity where present Highway 30 crosses Brants Creek. In the 1870s land in this area did have a mill located on it and was owned by Noel descendants but it is not known how long it may have been in the family. This location is in Paradise Township and on the north slopes of the Pigeon Hills. Joseph's son Peter lived in this general location of Paradise Township at the time of his death in 1771.
Joseph's son Noel (sic) married Margaret Strasbach, daughter of Nicholas Strasbach Sr as evidenced by the administration of Nicholas Strasbach's estate. Nicholas Noel was issued a warrant September 10, 1750 for 100 acres of land in the Berwick Township portion of Pigeon Hills. He sold this land in 1860 and was then living in Paradise Township. This joined land of John Abbott which later became site of Abbottstown.
The preceding suggests that the early settlement of the Noel family was along Beaver Creek and its tributaries. Those on the east side later falling in Paradise Township, York County) and those on the west side falling in Berwick. Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania.
Nothing is known concerning the name, birth, or death of Joseph's wife. It is not known where Joseph and his wife were buried.
2NI-1 PETER NOEL Born: - - 1720 Rhine Valley, possibly Alsace-Lorraine Died: Oct - 1771 Paradise Twp, York Co, PA Immigrated: Sep 16 1736 Rotterdam, Holland to Philadelphia, PA Ship: Princess Augusta, Samuel Marchant, Master

Peter Noel was born in or near the Rhine Valley of West Central Europe, probably in Alsace-Lorraine, the son of Joseph Noel.
The Noel family came to America in 1736 on the ship Princess Augusta. Peter was 16 years of age when the boat landed at Philadelphia and the only son of the family over 16.
Peter Noel reached maturity probably in Lancaster County, He married about 1749 as his first son was born about 1750. By the time of his marriage the family was probably residing in Paradise Township, York County, Pennsylvania. The name of his wife was Margaret but her maiden name is unknown.
Little is known concerning the life of Peter and Margaret Noel. The names of his children are known from the administration of his estate.
Peter Noel of Paradise Township, York County, made his will October 19, 1771, the original written in German. It was probated in York County on October 29. 1771. The heirs were listed as widow Margaret; issue: Peter Jr, John, Daniel, Barbara, married Peter Strasback, Blasius, Nicholas, Jacob, Magdalena, Margaret, and Mary, married Anthony Sell. Executors: Peter Noell and John Heidler.
It is obvious that Peter Noel died sometime between October 19 and 29, 1771. The place of burial of Peter and his wife are unknown.

Barbara was born some time in the early 1750s in Paradise Township, York County, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Peter and Margaret Noel.
Little is known concerning her youth.
She apparently married Peter Strasbaugh Sr prior
to the death of her father in 1771, Peter Strasbaugh was taxed as a married
man in 1772, the tax list being prepared in late 1771. It is probable that
Peter and Barbara went to Menallen Township, York County (Now Adams County)
immediately after their marriage.
