The two
pieces of genealogical information that were passed
down to our generation were that our NOEL family
ancestors came from Alsace Lorraine and also from
the Pigeon Hills near Hanover, PA.
Census
data connected our living relatives to Joseph S.
NOEL as an ancestor but that is where our search hit
a brick wall. Several people had looked for the
parents of Joseph S. NOEL and they left us with
facts that were very helpful in our own search.
Conewago
Chapel records show the marriage of James NOEL to
Maria (Polly) STRAUSBAUGH and the baptism of Rebecca
(1818), Jacob (David)(1821), James (1824), and
Andrew (1826).
Orphans
court dockets of 3 Jan 1843 set forth that James
NOEL had died intestate leaving widow Mary ( since
deceased~1841 ) and at issue David, Henry, John,
Joseph ( the last 3 being minors ) and Rebecca (
wife of Benjamin STRASWBACH ). We assume that James
and Andrew were either deceased prior to 1843 or not
an issue.
From the
headstone of Joseph S. NOEL, we knew that he was
born in 1833 and so we looked for a connection to
other siblings.
The
marriage of Joseph S. NOEL to Adaline HELFRICH in
the Catholic Church in Jackson Township was shown in
the
York Gazette on June 5, 1860.
The 1860
census for Jackson Township shows Joseph NOEL, 27 a
journey carpenter living with Henry NOEL, 37 a
master carpenter. This census also shows that Joseph
had been married within the last year. Therefore, we
believe that we have found the brotherly connection
of Joseph to his older brother Henry and as two of
the sons of James and Mary NOEL.
Ancestors shown before Joseph S. NOEL are the result of lots of hard work by many other people for which we are very grateful. We continue to look for more proof.

1. JOSEPH 1 NOEL (Source: LDS Pedigree Resource File-Compact Disc # 129.) was born Abt. 1680 in Alsace, France, and died Abt. 1753 in Paradise Twp, York County, PA.

From "Pennsylvania German Pioneers Vol I, Pages 163, 165, and 167:
Joseph, aged 56, and his family arrived on the Princess Augusta on 16 September 1736 from Rotterdam via Cowes. His family was an unnamed wife, one son Peter ( Pierre ), age 16 and five other children.
It is said that Joseph and his wife had several more children after locating in York county. Possible sons Jacob, Phillip, and Andrew but no proof at this time.

2. PETER 2 NOEL (JOSEPH1) was born Abt. 1720 in France, and died Abt. Oct 1771 in Paradise Twp, York County, PA. He married MARGARET UNKNOWN Abt. 1750 in York County, PA.
Notes for PETER NOEL:
Peter ( aka Pierre ) NOEL, age 16, came to America with his parents on the Princess Augusta from Rotterdam via Cowes in 1736.
Peter was Overseer of the Poor in Paradise Twp in 1754 and a constable in Paradise Twp in 1764.
About 29 March 1756, Peter and his brother Nicholas prayed for the release of their brother Joseph from his apprenticeship with Frederick KUHN, butcher of York Town.
Peter owned land in Paradise Twp in 1762 joining his brother John's lands 140 acres.
He made a will on 19 Oct 1771 and it was probated on 29 Oct 1771 so he must have died between those two dates. We have a transcribed copy of that will which lists his wife and children.

We have copies of Orphan Court Book U, p 136-137 that says:
January 3, 1843
" The petition of Benjamin STRAUSBACH was presented setting forth-That James NOEL lately died intestate leaving a widow who is also now dead, and children viz. David NOEL, Henry NOEL, John NOEL, Joseph NOEL, the last three being minor and Rebecca the wife of your petitioner. That intestate left a tract of land of about four acres in Paradise Township, with dwelling house and other improvements on it, which said heirs yet hold undivided, and cannot agree on partition."

Benjamin STRAUSBAUGH petioned the courts in 1843 on behalf of the minor children of James and Mary NOEL who both died by 1842. James owned 4 acres in Paradise Twp that was to be sold to settle the estate since the heirs had refused to accept the land. We copied index cards at the York Heritage Trust that show the sale was amended for $102 instead of the original $202.

In the 1900 census for the 10th ward, 1st precinct for York, PA, Adeline-age 63 is living in the household with Maggie TRACY-age 39 as the head of household with children Mammie-age 16, female-age 14, George-age 10, and Beatrice-age 8. Also in the house are male-age 31, William NOEL-age 27, and Frank NOEL-age 20.
In the 1910 census for the 10th ward, York, PA, Annie NOEL-age 71 is head of household with grandson George TRACEY-age 20, and Beatrice TRACEY-age 18 grand niece.
In the 1920 census for the 8th ward, 2nd precinct for York, PA, at 106 W. Maple St, Adeline-age 81 is living as the mother to the head of household F. A. NOEL-age 55.
Newspaper article from 10 Mar 1921 says Adeline " . . . died at the home of her son F. Augustus NOEL at 106 W Maple St due to complications of diseases and infirmities incident to old age. Mrs. NOEL, who was 83 years old, fell from a second story window to a concrete pavement about six weeks ago and this is believed to have hastened her death."

A newspaper article, dated 23 Jan 1936 listed the death of Jacob S. NOEL , grandson of the late D.K. NOEL a former mayor of York. Jacob was survived by his aged mother Margaret NOEL, brother Frank D. NOEL and sister O.L. WELSH all of Baltimore, MD.

In the 1930 census, same address, William A.-age 55 and Rose E.-age 54 show Frederick F.-age 22, Carolyn A.-age 16 and Rose Mary-age 20 daughter in law.
William A. Noel was a machinist for the York Corporation and worked there for about 50 years.

The trophy that we have shows that Fred F. NOEL played basketball for the St. Mary's C.C. in 1928-29. We also have a photo of that team and a smaller medallion for the St. M.C.C. for the 29-30 season.
Frederick Frommeyer NOEL was a marine in W W II and later was an agent for the John Hancock Insurance Company.

Notes for ROSE MARY HENDRICKSON:
As a child, Rose Mary HENRICKSON fell and broke her arm. They set and put the arm in a cast in the kitchen on Jessop Place.
Rose Mary was a friend of Mr. Strayer of Strayer/Beitzel so when daughter Rita started grade school, Rose agreed to go to work for Strayer/Beitzel.
Rose Mary also worked at Read Machinery in York and was seen in a newspaper clipping on a parade float for Read that was done about Oct 1927 for a centenial celebration.

Fred graduated from York Cathholic High School, where he later taught and coached basketball from 1960 to 1968.
Fred was an excellent athlete who played basketball 3 years at Elizabethtown State Teachers College and baseball for many years in the Central Baseball League in York, PA. Fred was also an above average tennis player and golfer. He also served in the US Army.
Fred was the assistant superintendant for special programs for the Diocese of Harrisburg with a Masters of Education degree from Western Maryland College. In his honor, the Diocese of Harrisburg selects a teacher each year to receive the Frederick F. Noel Distinguished Educator's Award.
